Composée en 1944 « à l'intention de Germain Prévost, pour être jouée à la mémoire d'Alphonse Onnou, fondateur du Quatuor Pro Arte ».
Il s'agit d'une commande d'Alphonse Onnou à qui Stravinsky avait donné des leçons pour l'exécution des Trois Pièces pour Quatuor à cordes et du Concertino avant un concert au Festival de Salzbourg en 1923. Cette pièce peut également être jouée à la quinte supérieure au violon. Elle a la forme d'un prélude et fugue et s'exécute avec la sourdine.
