piano
I wrote this sonatina in December 1947 for the greatly respected Russian piano teacher, Wladimir Horbowski, who worked in Stuttgart. Unfortunately, however, the manuscript somehow went astray over the years (probably as a result of moving on several occasions) and was thought lost.
But it recently turned up in Basle, in the archives of the Paul Sacher Foundation, and is now enjoying the light of day once again. I’m really excited about its rediscovery (with its clumsy and vague reflections of piano music by old masters of that time) and about the coming performance. A big thank you to Christopher Tainton, the pianist, and to all those who have helped to bring this piece back to life.
Hans Werner Henze, June 2003.
